Instead of a familiar rectangular format, the U.S. visa photo is a square 2x2 inch (5x5 cm) photo, with several technical requirements for the digital file uploaded to DS-160.

What does a standard U.S. visa photo look like?

Unlike CCCD or Vietnam passport photos, which use a 4x6 cm rectangle, U.S. visa photos must be square. This is where many applicants get confused at non-specialized photo shops.

The U.S. Department of State rules for DS-160 photos require a photo with these criteria:

• Size: square 2x2 inches, equivalent to 5x5 cm.
• Background: plain white or off-white, with no patterns or shadows behind you.
• Photo age: taken within the last 6 months, reflecting your current appearance.
• Expression: natural, eyes open and looking straight, mouth closed. No glasses (including clear glasses).
• Face proportion: head height (top of head to chin) around 25–35 mm, or about 50–69% of photo height.

Size conversion: how many centimeters is 2x2 inches?

This is the first question almost everyone asks. Inches are less familiar in Vietnam, so exact conversion matters to avoid cropping the photo wrong.

As shown above, a U.S. visa photo is a 5 cm square, completely different from the 4x6 cm rectangle used domestically. Digital file requirements for DS-160 upload

This is the technical part that causes the most trouble. When filling out DS-160 online, you will be asked to upload a digital photo file. The system checks the file automatically, so the specifications must be right.

DS-160 upload photo specifications:

• Format: JPEG (extension `.jpg`).
• Shape: square — width equals height.
• Resolution: minimum about 600 x 600 pixels, maximum about 1200 x 1200 pixels.
• File size: under 240KB.
• Color: color photo (24-bit), white background, no editing that changes identity.
